The Return of Stanisław Vincenz’s Library

The Vincenz: Library exhibition at the Lviv Historical Museum

On the initiative of Mykola Kniazhytskyi, the private library of Polish writer, philosopher and scholar of the Hutsul region Stanisław Vincenz, known as the “Homer of the Hutsul region”, was returned to Ukraine.

The collection of almost 1,000 rare volumes was purchased in Germany with funds provided by Mykola Kniazhytskyi. It includes unique editions of works by Homer, Dante, Shakespeare and Plato, as well as books bearing autographs and dedications by prominent European intellectuals and Vincenz’s contemporaries.

In February 2021, part of the library was displayed at the “Vincenz. Library” exhibition at the Lviv Historical Museum. The exhibition also featured photographs of Stanisław Vincenz’s life and the traditions and culture of the Hutsul region.

After the exhibition, the library was transferred to the Ukrainian Catholic University to preserve, study and provide open access to Stanisław Vincenz’s intellectual legacy.
