The third and final stage of the “Espreso. Readers’ Choice 2020” book award has concluded
The geography and number of participants of the Award increase every year. This year, the Organizing Committee received as many as 12,621 votes from readers of libraries from all over Ukraine, three times more than last year. Voting for the best book for children, teenagers and adults took place in almost 400 libraries across the country. Readers had the opportunity not only to familiarize themselves with and read the best novelties of literature, but also to vote for their favorite.
Three children’s books competed for the victory in the “Literature for Children” nomination:
“When I was a fox” Tanya Postavna (“Vivat” publishing house)
“Miya and the Lunar Eclipse” by Olya Rusin (“Stary Lev Publishing House”)
“The Story Told by Zhuka” by Hrasya Oliyko (“Old Lion Publishing House”)
In the nomination “Literature for teenagers” it was necessary to choose a favorite from among the books:
“Spies from the shelter “Artemis” Natalia Dovgopol (publishing house “Vivat”)
“Sulphur on Gunpowder” Ivan Andrusiak (“Fountain of Tales” publishing house)
“Don’t tell anyone” Sasha Kaminska (Ranok publishing house)
It was difficult to make a choice in the nomination “Literature for adults” from among the books:
“Amadoka” by Sofia Andruhovych (“Stary Lev Publishing House”)
“Planet Wormwood” by Oksana Zabuzhko (“Komara” Publishing House)
poetry book “List of ships” Serhii Zhadan (Meridian Chernovits publishing house)
Readers of the libraries noted that it was not easy to choose among the proposed books, because each literary work was extremely interesting, fascinating and worthy of attention. Teenagers and children chose the best book most actively. It is especially pleasant, as the library staff noted, that contests such as “Espreso. Readers’ Choice” encourage young people to read, develop imagination and empathy. And they also stimulate the desire to think, evaluate the book and justify their opinion when making a choice.
On December 1, the Organizing Committee of the “Espreso. Readers’ Choice” award began counting votes. Hundreds of libraries have already sent and continue to send completed questionnaires and readers’ voting protocols. The winners of the Award will be announced on December 23 at the Award Ceremony live on the Espreso TV channel, on the Espreso TV website and on the FB page.
We will remind you that the “Espreso. Readers’ Choice” book award was founded by the “Espreso” TV channel and supported by the NGO “Demforum”. Its presentation took place in May 2017 as part of the international Book Arsenal festival in Kyiv. The award continues for the fourth year in a row. We will remind that during June 2020, a Long List of 145 books was formed at the First Stage based on the proposals of 37 publishing houses. Further, in the Second stage, during July, 38 experts worked on the evaluation of publications, each in their own separate nomination. According to the calculations of the voting results among the experts, 3 finalist books were determined. These works were used in the third final stage of readers’ voting for the best book in libraries throughout Ukraine.
Charity concert-telethon “Thank you to the Defenders of Ukraine”
The “All-Ukrainian Democratic Forum” together with the Poltava Battalion of the Indifferent are holding a charity telethon concert as part of the All-Ukrainian action “Thank the Defenders of Ukraine”!
The bands KOZAK SYSTEM and BEZ LIMITS will sing for Ukrainian heroes, and millions of viewers will be able to thank them by watching and participating in the collection of funds that will go to the treatment of Ukrainian defenders.

The third, final stage of the book award “Espreso. Readers’ Choice 2020”.
2,319 books went to their new homes, to 401 libraries across Ukraine.
Readers of these libraries now have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the books that made it to the finals and vote for their favorite.
Book prize “Espreso. “Readers’ Choice” was founded by the “Espreso” TV channel in 2017 and is supported by the NGO “Demforum” in order to celebrate the best domestic literary novelties of the year and to support interest in reading books in Ukraine. We strive for publishers to find an effective way to reach readers through recommendations, reviews and evaluation of books by readers and authoritative experts. The peculiarity of our Award is that its winners are determined by readers at the last stage by voting in libraries throughout Ukraine.
The winners of the Award will be announced in mid-December 2020 on the air of the “Espreso” TV channel, on the “Espreso.TV” and NGO “Demforum” websites.

Forum “Via Carpatia 2020. Places of Ukrainian strength”
The forum “Via Carpatia 2020. Places of Ukrainian strength” was a success, we can finally say that. Discussion panels were held live on the Espreso TV channel and a number of events were held in various locations of the city.
Discussions were devoted to the formation and development of institutions in Ukraine, technological solutions and copyright in the field of culture and Ukrainian places of strength. The forum ended with a panel organized by the Ukrainian PEN, “What gives us strength?”.
All discussions were broadcast on Facebook and are available on the page facebook.com/VIACARPATIAforum in the record.
“Via Carpatia always takes place in Verkhovyna, Ivano-Frankivsk region, but since there is now a quarantine and the region has been in the red zone for a long time, they could not hold it there this year. At first, they hesitated whether to hold the forum at all, but decided to move it to Lviv and hold it partially live. And we were right! People are very thirsty for an intellectual discussion live, let it take place in a television studio – it is a special atmosphere, a high degree of tension. Famous politicians, public figures, journalists, writers spoke about Ukrainian places of strength, and the studio itself became the place where intellectual strength is created. By the way, the new Espreso studio in Lviv started its work from the broadcast of Via Carpatia panel discussions.”

Offline events were held in cooperation with the Ukrainian PEN. Writers from Penev presented books for children – Ivan Andrusiak and artist Maria Savko, and for adults – a collection of essays “Bridges instead of walls. What unites Ukrainians?”.
Poetry readings by SYLAbotonika gathered fans of poetry in the Lviv Regional Youth Library named after R. Ivanychuk.
The central event of the forum was the presentation of the award named after Stanisław Vincenz “For Humanistic Service and a Contribution to Regional Development”. The third laureate of the award was Leonid Finberg, director of the Center for Research in the History and Culture of East European Jewry and editor-in-chief of the Spirit and Litera publishing house.

On Saturday, September 26 at 8:40 a.m., one of the TV programs on the “Right to the Future” project on vaccination was shown on the Espreso TV channel.
The following questions are raised in the program:
Vaccination. Myths and reality. Uninvented stories of people whose fate was changed by one decision – to vaccinate or not. Liability of medical workers for their mistakes in relation to patients. The doctor and the Internet, emotions and logic, fakes and critical thinking. What makes people say yes or no to vaccinations.

Forum “Via Carpatia. Places of Ukrainian strength” will be held in Lviv and will be broadcast live
On September 26-27, the Third International Forum of Eastern and Central Europe Via Carpatia will be held in Lviv. This year, its leading theme is “Places of Ukrainian strength.”
The program of the forum includes thematic panels, during which artists and experts, opinion leaders will discuss the formation of institutions, the impact of technology on the culture and places of strength of Ukraine. Also, writers – members of the Ukrainian PEN will share their thoughts on the topic “What will give us strength?”. Responding to the challenges of the epidemic situation, the discussions will take place live on the Espreso TV channel, with broadcast on YouTube and Facebook.
Also, as part of the forum, live events will take place in the Lviv Ivan Franko National Literary and Memorial Museum, the National Memorial Museum
