Applications are now open for the “Espreso. Readers’ Choice” award

The 4th season of the “Espreso. Readers’ Choice” book award has begun. Applications for participation began on June 1.

This year’s innovation is a nomination for the best literature for teenagers. First, publishers submit their new works for participation. To submit proposals for books for participation in the award, you need to fill out an electronic form. Next, the organizing committee checks applications for compliance. At the next stage, an expert jury forms a list of favorites.

“I approach from the point of view of innovativeness of style, harmony of style and content. Relevance of the topic, readability, because the mass reader should read an easy book about complex topics.”

– commented the literary critic, expert of the “Espreso. Readers’ choice” by Nina Golovchenko.

After the work of the experts, 3 finalist books from each nomination are sent to libraries — more than 275 in all corners of Ukraine, except for the occupied parts. There, readers give a final assessment of the literature.

“What I really like about the Espreso award. Readers’ choice” that it was a vote in libraries. And, in fact, the readers made the final choice from the 3 books that made it to the finals.”

– emphasized the writer Haska Shiyan.

The writer Gaska Shiyan won the award last year with her novel “Behind the Back” – about the fate of a soldier’s wife.

Shiyan added:

“Since the book is such a rather sensitive topic and in a certain sense provocative, I rather expected some kind of negative feedback. A more negative reaction. I did not expect that there would be prizes, awards. And, in fact, it was very pleasant and very important for me in the sense that I understood that the Ukrainian reader and the Ukrainian literary environment are ripe for discussion and discussion of this topic.

Ukrainian writers can apply for the Espreso. Readers’ Choice” throughout June.

The requirements are as follows: the book must have been published in the last year and must be in the Ukrainian language. Among the award nominations are literature for children, teenagers and adults.

The “Espreso” TV channel and the NGO Demforum established the 2017 award to support Ukrainians’ interest in reading.

“Espreso’s audience is cultured, intelligent, educated people. The cultural layer of the Ukrainian book is also important for them. They share our values, the values of the TV channel. Therefore, we were sure that this project would be interesting for our audience.”

– summed up the communication manager of the “Espreso. Readers’ choice” Borys Yaskovets.

This year’s Prize winners will be announced at the end of November 2020 at a solemn ceremony, as well as on the air of the Espreso TV channel and on the Espreso.TV website.

The “All-Ukrainian Democratic Forum” warns: the cultural crisis will intensify the economic one

The non-governmental organization “All-Ukrainian Democratic Forum” appeals to the government and parliament not to kill the development of the country’s humanitarian sphere in order to save money.

The lives and health of Ukrainians are a priority, and it is necessary to make every effort to preserve them. Such a situation requires financial restrictions. This entails redistribution of budget funds for public health needs. However, the Government’s proposed reduction in financing of entire branches of creative industries will inevitably lead to their actual destruction. It seems that the budget changes were prepared without consultation with the institutions and without taking into account the risks in the future. Even operational actions must be balanced so that the side effect of the “medicine” does not lead to irreversible damage to the country.

The non-governmental organization “All-Ukrainian Democratic Forum” contributes to the development of culture by implementing art projects and organizing meetings of leading intellectuals and politicians. For three years, we have been holding the Via Carpatia International Forum of Eastern and Central Europe.

We know that without the support of the state, Ukrainian culture is doomed to another difficult period of stagnation, which is especially unfortunate in view of the violent revival of the past years. Many creative and production processes in culture are implemented over a long period and the creation of a critical imbalance in the budget financing project will lead to significant cultural losses.

All efforts should be made to prevent a deep humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.

Since 2014, a number of government institutions have been created or strengthened their work on the support and development of culture: the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation, the Ukrainian Book Institute, the State Agency of Ukraine for Film Affairs, the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance. They received proper funding for the first time and it had a powerful effect in the industry.

Therefore, the change in financing conditions should be carried out after consultation with stakeholders and assessment of the long-term consequences of stopping project financing. National culture and memory are the key to the sustainability of reforms and the building of a democratic society in Ukraine, strengthening countermeasures against Russia’s hybrid aggression.

Please maintain the ability to conduct work at an appropriate level for:

All these institutions, objects, works and projects are an important foundation of Ukrainian cultural stability, spending on them does not mean “eating”, but will be an infusion into the economy and the creation of jobs. Spending on them means preserving the “humanitarian front” in the face of Russia’s hybrid aggression. Spending on them means strengthening the consolidation of society in the face of threats of a pandemic and armed aggression.

Due to the pandemic, the economic crisis is inevitable not only in Ukraine, but also in the whole world. Reducing spending on culture and the humanitarian sphere will complicate the perception of this crisis by society and may exacerbate public confrontation, which the aggressor Russia will certainly take advantage of.

Therefore, for the sake of long-term stability, it is necessary to prevent the crisis of culture caused by the mechanical reduction of state appropriations by all means.

We will remind you that “Vincenz” is a future large-scale film, which is planned to be co-produced by Ukraine and EU countries (in particular, Poland), dedicated to the “Homer” of the Hutsul region – Stanisław Vincenz, the author of the Hutsul epic “On the High Uplands”. In the center of the plot is a great story of life and love, and a true tale about the origins of European civilization, where the modern viewer will see recipes for saving the world in which we all live today.

The fantastic stories of the epic will come to life in the film between the episodes of the life of the outstanding thinker – and will pass as a leitmotif through his personal story of love, struggle, escape from wars and totalitarian regimes to remind us of another world – the dream paradise of Europe of many peoples living among themselves in harmony and mutual understanding – a world that we have lost, but which we can still revive.

The pre-production project was implemented in 2019 by the NGO “All-Ukrainian Democratic Forum” with the support of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation, and the script in 2018 – also with the support of UKF, was created by Ukrainian playwrights Natalia Vorozhbyt (“Cyborgs”) and Max Kurochkin. This spring, the project is getting a boost thanks to script doctoring in the US.
Shooting is planned to begin this year.
