The international online academic conference “Stanisław Vincenz’s Homo agens” will take place on December 18–19

On December 18 and 19, 2021, the international scientific online conference “Homo agens” by Stanisław Vincenz will be held.

“Stanisław Vincenz’s Homo agens” is a catchphrase inspired by the modern experience of the pandemic as a time that calls for action.

The focus of the conference is the biography and literary and intellectual legacy of Stanisław Vincenz, an author and philosopher who connects the idea of freedom with action.

The organizers will also offer a targeted, but also unlimited reading of “Polonina”, “Post-war vicissitudes of Socrates”, “Dialogues with the Soviets”, essays, drafts and correspondence, in order to once again hear the voice of Vincenz, who was a witness and participant in several historical turning points and dramatic social processes: the industrial revolution in the Eastern Carpathians, the birth of nationalism, which destroyed the essence of local communities, both World Wars, genocide, emigration and isolation

The NGO “All-Ukrainian Democratic Forum” will be presented at the conference by acting chairman of the board Yaryna Yasynevych with a report “Promotion of Vincenz’s heritage in Ukraine” and project manager Maria Gurska on the topic “Film “On the High Uplands”: Polish-Ukrainian co-production”.

“Espreso. Readers’ Choice 2021”: Voting for children’s favorite book is underway

The final stage of the “Espreso. Readers’ Choice 2021” competition for the best Ukrainian children’s book is underway.

Since September, young Ukrainians have been choosing one winner in the “Literature for Children” category among the three finalist books: “Oleksa Dovbush. The Secret of Power” by Vasyl Karpyuk, “Lost in the Camp” by Nastya Muzychenko and “The Porpoise Detective” by Ivan Andrusiak.

Natalia Nevmerzhitska, librarian:

“Our readers, in principle, voted very actively even in the period established for readers’ voting, namely the third stage. Now our children simply read to themselves, leave oral feedback about these books.”

In the fifth season, over 600 libraries participate in the final stage of the award, where young readers vote for the books they have read. These are preschoolers and students of grades 1-4.

Natalia Zimina, librarian:

“Our children read different books. The smallest are poems, and there are many illustrations. And children of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades are very interested in adventures. Some children wrote such interesting things. About the fact that they love detectives”

Librarians are convinced that the prize attracts children to read the best books, which will be distributed in the country’s book collections.

Alla Gordienko, director of the National Library of Ukraine for Children:

“The main thing for us now, as children’s librarians, is to teach a child to read. And this award confirms that we choose the best books for children, for our development. Because children are our future. Everything we do is for the future, for our children.”

Thanks to the Charitable Fund “Together” of patron Lyudmila Rusalina, more and more Ukrainian libraries attract young visitors to read domestic books. This year, the foundation is a partner of the “Literature for Children” nomination. He helped buy books for libraries. Lyudmila Rusalina’s “Together” charity foundation also helps in the organization of various sports, cultural and educational events. Meanwhile, the Organizing Committee of the Book Award is already preparing for the awarding ceremony of the winners. The results of the voting of young readers of libraries all over Ukraine are promised to be announced at the beginning of 2022.

A special project marking the 88th anniversary of the Holodomor in Ukraine on Espreso TV

Today, Ukraine and the world commemorate the victims of the Holodomor. This memory unites Ukrainians in our country and in other countries where they live. It has become an important element of national identity

This memory is also important as a warning of what can happen to a nation that fails to protect its freedom. We have not forgotten the horrors of 1932-1933 and are now ready to defend our independence with weapons in hand.

The recognition of the Holodomor as a genocide of the Ukrainian people by the parliaments of other states and individual regions is very important, because it emphasizes the persistence of the war waged against Ukraine for centuries, first by the colonizers, and now by the aggressors. And it is extremely important for us that everything we do to honor the memory of the dead is heard not only by our citizens, but by the whole world.

Today, the information war continues around the topic of the Holodomor, and Russia still uses the key myths created by it as grounds for claiming Ukraine as a “failed state” and spreads it abroad.

These problems, as well as how Ukrainians restored memory and how they tell the world about the crime of genocide and at the same time communicate the criminal essence of totalitarianism and the need to protect human rights, will be discussed in a special project of the Liberation Movement Research Center, the Center for Strategic Communications and Information Security, the All-Ukrainian Democratic Forum NGO and the Espreso TV channel.

We hope that such a project will become another proof that Ukraine will always remember the Holodomor not only as one of the greatest tragedies of the Ukrainian people, but will also demonstrate the strength of our people and prevent the recurrence of similar crimes in the future.

On the 88th anniversary of the Holodomor in Ukraine, in memory of the millions who died, we offer viewers meaningful conversations:

Why is international recognition of the Holodomor important for Ukraine? What was the role of the diaspora in breaking the information blockade about the communist crime? At 5:05 p.m., we will talk about it with Maksym Mayorov, an expert at the Center for Strategic Communications and Information Security, Hanna Hopko, a public activist and journalist, and Oleksiy Haran, a professor at the Department of Political Science at the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences.

How did Ukraine remember the Holodomor? How did society react to the discovery of the truth about the communist crime? What is the attitude of Ukrainians to this topic in the 30th year of independence? At 6:10 p.m., publicist Vitaliy Portnykov, MP, historian and researcher of KGB archives Volodymyr Vyatrovych and Tetiana Lyshnevets, executive director of the Holodomor Museum foundation, will talk about this.

The success of “Force of Destiny,” a film created by the NGO “All-Ukrainian Democratic Forum”

Force of Destiny is a non-children’s film about children’s health. The refusal of vaccinations led to irreparable consequences – and the little girl was a hair’s breadth away from death. The documentary has already won a number of prestigious awards.

The story of Nastya Huzarska is not fiction. As a result of her parents’ refusal of vaccinations, she contracted whooping cough and measles. In another two years, the diseases went away. And by the age of four, the child’s condition was critical, irreversible processes began in the heart and it became the size of a 17-year-old athlete.

The documentary film “Force of Destiny”, produced by the All-Ukrainian Democratic Forum, was nominated for 2 awards at the Fusion International Film Festivals (Brussels) as part of the USAID-Internews “Medical Journalism” competition: the best short documentary film and a talented filmmaker.
The award ceremony took place yesterday, August 21, 2021, in an online format.

We are very happy that the film was recognized by international experts in two nominations: “Best Short Documentary” and “Talented Filmmaker”.
“Force of Destiny” is a unique story of a girl who, as a result of her parents’ refusal to receive vaccinations, contracted whooping cough and measles. The consequences of these diseases are amazing. At the age of two, Nastya Huzarska developed complications from measles. And by the age of four, the situation reached such a critical level that the only way to save the girl was a heart transplant.

The expert jury of the “Espreso. Readers’ Choice 2021” book award selected three finalists in the “Adult Literature” category

We remind you that the book prize “Espreso. Readers’ Choice” has been celebrating the best domestic literary novelties of the year for the fifth year in a row.

In the 2nd stage (during July), a highly respected expert jury of 12 professional literary experts and critics chose the best books from the Long List. Out of 84 books in the “Literature for adults” category, which were submitted for their unbiased assessment, 3 editions made it to the finals.

The top three finalists of the “Espreso.Readers’ Choice 2021” book award in the “Literature for adults” nomination, based on the results of a secret vote by experts, are as follows:

“20+1, or the Land of the Dead” by Pavlo Volvach (publishing house “Stary Lev Publishing House”)

“20+1 or the Land of the Dead” is a book in the crossover genre, in which Pavlo Volvach uses the classic means of memoir not only to create a gallery of iconic portraits of the time, but also to build his own biography as a weave of “cross paths” with all those diametrically different people.

Next to the classics of Ukrainian literature, shadowy people from the lumpen-criminalized Zaporozhian “towns” have joined here, in one company there are a musician with a solid prison and heroin experience, “Zaporebyk” countercultural figures, forgotten domestic political prisoners, and this heterogeneity of Volvach’s prose drawings will allow the reader to get into the kitchens of absolute geniuses and true evil spirits, to hear the dead is to see the living.

Poetry collection “Aviation Psalm” Serhii Zhadan (Meridian Czernowitz publishing house)

These poems were written during 2020. The place where they wrote lies on the hills. This meant the presence of a wide horizon line and a large amount of air. And there were also many trees and birds, there were streams, ponds and the even, distant breathing of the city beyond the horizon. A change in optics somehow leads to a change in writing. This is what the book is mainly about: how landscapes shape us, how trees give us verticality, and lakes give us depth, how spring greenery teaches us optimism, and summer rivers teach us generosity. Simple knowledge that helps to appreciate every voice heard in the morning.

The photo of Marisa Myanovska is used in the artwork and on the cover.

“Radio Night” Yuriy Andruhovych (“Meridian Czernowitz” publishing house)

As in “real reality”, another revolution has been defeated. Maybe because she lost her mysterious leader. Joseph Rothsky (not to be confused with Joseph Brodsky or Joseph Roth), the musical hero of the barricades, is forced to flee somewhere, risking the fate of many other Josephs. He is being persecuted, and the regime’s special services are only half the trouble. There’s also an inappropriate love to deal with and a bank secret to deal with. Prison experience and an involuntarily successful terrorist attack. As well as mind and oblivion, laughter and darkness, cold and hell, irony and pain. The last hiding place from where it is allowed to conduct the night ether. Is it really the last?..

“Radio Night” is the most poignant and at the same time the most lyrical work of Yuriy Andruhovych. A space where adventure romance meets fantasy and David Bowie meets traveling musicians of the Middle Ages.

It is nice to note that many books worthy of victory were submitted to this year’s competition, so it was not easy for the experts of the Award to make their choice.

Books that were noted by experts, but did not make it to the finals:

“Prison Song” by Olena Gerasimyuk (“Furious Business” publishing house)
